Barolo, Vietti, "castiglione", 2019For over 150 years the Vietti estate, seated at the peak of the highest point within Castiglione Falletto, has overlooked the medieval castle for which the surrounding village is named. The greater region of Barolo is world renowned for its rich history, rolling hillsides, and one of the worlds most prestigious grapes, Nebbiolo, a thin-skinned and highly aromatic grape that produces wines that may look light but are packed with power in every sip. The fruit is sourced from a selection of several different sites within the region that are individually pressed, vinified, aged, and seamlessly woven together, creating a wine that will draw you back sip after sip after sip.111

Brut Rosé V.s.q., Luigi Giordano, "metodo Classico", 2019From northern facing vineyards in the heart of Barbaresco, the Giordano family has crafted a vintage sparkling wine made to the exacting standards of Champagne, and utilizing the most noble red grape of Piedmont, Nebbiolo. The family estate was founded in 1930 by Giuseppe Giordano and is now in the hands of 4th generation Giordanos Laura and her son Matteo. The cooler northern facing vineyards allow the grapes to mature more slowly and more completely while maintaining freshness, and the resulting wine is refreshingly dry in style and sure to delight.94

Nascetta Di Novello, Elvio Cogno, "anas-cëtta", 2022From serving wine in his family restaurant to working side by side with the great estate of Marcarini, Elvio Cogno has become one of the most revered names in Piemonte. Elvio purchased a magnificent and historic 18th-century farmhouse at the summit of Bricco Ravera, in the heart of Novello. By 1990, Elvio rebuilt the manor, created his self-named winery, and turned the old granaries into the wine cellars used today. He committed the following 20 years to continuing the winemaking customs his father and grandpa taught him. His "Anas-Cëtta" exhibits fresh grapefruit, cedar, and ginger aromas tied into intense notes of white flowers, Mediterranean herbs, and delicate mineral hints.93

Featured Friuli Venezia Giulia White
Friulano, Collio, La Ponca, 2021In the Collio region of Friuli Venezia Giulia come some of Italy's finest white wines. The La Ponca estate, found in the hamlet of Scriò, is poised to become one of the great producers of the region. Luscious forests in the foothills of the Alps surround their terraced vineyards that abut the Slovenian border a mere twenty miles from the Mediterranean Sea. The winery takes its name from the "ponca" soil type it sits upon. This soil consists of layers of sandstone alternating with marl and silt that give their wines a distinctive minerality. La Ponca produces a wide range of varietals indigenous to the region with a focus on the famed Friulano. The Friulano grape is typically poured in trattorias throughout Friuli as an aperitif served with prosciutto and cicchetti. La Ponca's expression is a different story that lends notes of flint, pear, and apricots, with a scent of wildflowers and mint in the distance. Where this wine truly shines is its signature textural mouthfeel begging for another sip.124

Ischia, Antonio Mazzella, "biancollela", 2023The island of Ischia, the largest of the Phlegrean Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is about 20 mi. offshore from Naples. It is roughly 6 miles east to west and 4 miles north to south, entirely mountainous, and is famous for its thermal gardens created by its volcanic activity. Antonio Mazzella crafts this singular wine from what he describes as vertical vineyards" on the steep hills mere feet from where the land meets the sea. Brimming forth with sun-kissed freshness and radiant texture, not many wines can convey a "sense of place" quite like this one, just try to not be swept away to an island paradise after one sip.91

The Hilt, Sta. Rita Hills, 2022"Through adversity, character is not built, but revealed" – James Lane Allen They say to make great wine, the vine must struggle. To make wine on rocky and windswept ridges of the Sta. Rita Hills requires patience and skill. Winemaker Matt Dees crafts this Chardonnay of balance and pleasure from the fog-laden Estate vineyards of Bentrock, Radian, and Puerta del Mar, located mere miles from the Pacific Ocean.112

Superiore, San Fereolo, 2013Nicoletta Bocca has been at the helm of San Fereolo since 1992 and has become a master of the Valdibà subzone in Dogliani. Dogliani is home to some of the most complex expressions of Dolcetto, the "little sweet one." While its name can be misleading because Dolcetto is decidedly dry, this wine shines with dark, rich fruit and a soft, earthy finish. Nicoletta's vines date back to 1935; her youngest are from 1978, translating to spellbinding aromatics and minerality. We recommend drinking it like the Piedmontese would: as an opening act with antipasti while waiting for a fine Barolo or Barbaresco to breathe or passed around the table during casual everyday family meals.112

Lessona, Sperino, 2017Paolo De Marchi may be one of the most important people in Italian wine after bringing the famed Isole e Olena estate in Tuscany to wine royalty. He and his son have now transitioned all their focus back to their original family cellars in a 200-year-old castle in Lessona. Paolo grew up here and is now paying his respect to the land that shaped him. Their vineyards are in the historic district of Ori (meaning 'gold' in Italian), characterized by its bright yellow, deep marine sands. The Nebbiolo (locally known as "Spanna") that grows here takes a different form than the expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco. Expect lifted aromas of crunchy red berries and spicy rose with precision like minerality that begs for truffle risotto... hint hint184

Barolo
Featured Barolo
Brovia, 2020Brovia rubs shoulders with Barolo's moste elite producers: Cappellano, Burlotto, Giacosa and Mascarello but truly indefies the notion that greatness comes with a hefty price tag. Dating back to 1863, this esteemed winery is now led by Elena Brovia, the 4th generation of the family along with her husband Alex Sanchez, who are crafting the estate's most exceptional wines to date. Situated in Castiglione di Falletto, a sub-region of Barolo renowned for its balanced wines and diverse soil compositions, Brovia possesses holdings in the very best vineyard sites including: Villero, Rocche, and Fiasco (a.k.a. "Garblèt Sue'"). While some may label Brovia as "traditionalist" when compared to "modernist" in style, their unwavering focus lies more on delivering supreme quality and showcasing the distinctive terroir -- all at an outstanding value243

Prapò, Schiavenza, 2014The structure of the Barolo wine region is becoming more like Burgundy in France every vintage. The region has been broken down into individual communes that have been broken down further into officially recognized 'menzionis' or 'crus.' Schiavenza was founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria. They took the name 'Schiavenza' as it translates to 'sharecropping' in the local dialect. On your next trip to the growing region Serralunga d'Alba, where the winery calls home, take a trip to the estate's Trattoria Schiavenza which showcases traditional dishes from the area that pair effortlessly with their wines.Their Prapò focuses on wines with extraordinary structure and longevity. Enjoy this taste of the motherland over a decade in the making.177

Barolo Riserva
Featured "Le Menzioni" del Barolo Riserva
Rocche Di Castiglione, Monchiero, 2015Barolo Riserva is the crown jewel of Italy. A rarity made by select producers in only the best of vintages, one doesn't need to wait for a special occasion to pull the cork-- the act of opening a bottle in itself becomes the celebratory event. Requiring over five years of aging before release, this Barolo Riserva offers layers of flavor that transcend what you might find in any other wine.204

Barbaresco
Featured "Le Menzioni" del Barbaresco
Bricco Di Neive, Cigliuti, "vie-erte", 2019Since the founding of Cigluiti in 1964, the winery's focus has always been quality over quantity. In Piedmont before the 1980s, it was sacrilegious to practice "green harvesting" or cutting grapes to concentrate the quality of the remaining grapes. Renato of Cigliuti was told by his neighbors he was throwing away money for green harvesting, and in his first vintage, he produced 300 bottles. Today, he and his daughters stand as one of the premier producers of Barbaresco that no one has ever heard of. Their Bricco di Neive hails from a small plot known as Vie Erte just outside of the town of Neive. Renato's approach has always been to let the terroir speak for itself in the glass through his mantra, "this blessed land." His Vie-Erte does just that by lending notes of bright red fruit, orange peel, white pepper, and mint that scream nuance and finesse.178

The Wines of Angelo Gaja
Featured Gaja Half Bottle
Barbaresco, Gaja, 2017Angelo Gaja is the man credited for bringing the small commune of Barbaresco out of obscurity. His influence has changed the way the world views Italian wine to this day. A master of Nebbiolo--the austere, tannic grape once considered only quaffable after decades of bottle age. Angelo saw its potential as a world class wine. Despite pushback from his peers, he employed new (and what most considered outlandish) practices both in the vineyard and the winery to promote freshness and elegance in his wine.375mL 291

Chianti
Featured Chianti Classico
Cigliano Di Sopra, 2022Hailing from the village of San Casciano in the heart of Chianti (the very same as the famed Antinori "Tignanello" bottling), it's safe to say these hills are capable of world-class Sangiovese. It only helps that the husband and wife team behind Cigliano di Sopra pay such careful attention to their wine that their third family dog's name is Alice III. The way they make their Chianti—with whole-berry fermentation and neutral oak aging—allows the terroir of this small village to shine. This is not your average Chianti Classico.124

Brunello di Montalcino
Featured Brunello di Montalcino
Ciacci Piccolomini D'aragona, 2018Olea europaea (olives), or Vitis Vinifera (common winemaking grapevine)? Luckily, the Ciacci Piccolomini family grows both. Their Montalcino estate dates back to the 17th century, where they cultivate a property stretching 195 hectares with 50 dedicated to vine and 40 to olive groves. Their expressions of Sangiovese Grosso, the clone responsible for producing Brunello di Montalcino, offer the drinker one of the truest and most ethereal expressions of the pinnacle in Italian wine. The soils surrounding their estate in the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate date back to the Eocene period over 30 million years ago and are composed of galestro. This terroir leads to the wine's distinct expressiveness of spice, florality, and power. Pour a bit of history into your glass this evening and enjoy what the Tuscan countryside has to offer.197

Featured Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Franco Pacenti, 2015Brunello di Montalcino has risen to be the premier interpretation of Tuscan Sangiovese. At the Riserva level, it ranks among some of the highest aging requirements of any other table wine in the world. By law, it may not be released until the 6th year following harvest, and is mandated to mature in oak for a minimum of two years. Full in body, a Riserva designated Brunello expresses all the traditional flavors one expects from the varietal with an emphasis on black cherry, chocolate notes, and a dark earthiness. The resulting wine is a more pronounced, luxurious bottling that only the hill of Montalcino can provide.289

Montellori, "salamartano", 2015 - $176The Super Tuscan movement began in the early 1970s and quickly spread like wildfire. As the "unofficial" star of the region, these wines were made famous by incorporating non-native grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Fattoria Montellori's top bottling "Salamartano", masterfully blends these Tuscan-grown varieties into a powerful yet elegant style that stands up against the best of Napa and Bordeaux.176

Featured Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Vaona, "pegrandi", 2017Just outside of Verona lie the hills of Valpolicella which is home to one of Italy's greatest wines: Amarone. Composed of a blend of special, native varietals, Amarone's claim to fame is a result of its unique production method, appassimento. Directly translating to "withering" or "fading", appassimento refers to a special grape-drying process that concentrates the sugars and flavors in grapes destined for Amarone. Full-bodied and powerful with ripe fruit, these wines deliver a unique expression of Northern Italian wine.198

Veneto Reds of Quintarelli & Dal Forno
Featured Producers
Quintarelli Vs. Dal FornoDRC vs. Leroy...Lafite vs. Latour...Conterno vs. Gaja... the wine geek's equivalent to a political debate (notwithstanding a little BS) in a quest for the single greatest expression of a particular wine. In Valpolicella, two producers indisputably reign at the top of the quality pyramid: Quintarelli and Dal Forno. Both producers commit maniacal attention to fruit selection, sorting down to the individual berry if necessary to achieve the best extraction of flavor possible. Quintarelli's genius in the cellar is carried out through more traditional methods of èlevage, while Dal Forno boasts one of the most technologically advanced wineries in the world. Preference in the resulting wines can be polarizing depending on the taster, but the quality of both is unquestionable. Where Quintarelli masterfully draws elegance and otherworldly aromas out of his Amarones, Dal Forno excels in achieving depths of concentration winemakers in Napa only dream about.

Montepulciano D'abruzzo, Tiberio, "archivio", 2020Cristiana Tiberio and her brother, Antonio, have transformed their small winery in the quaint village of Cugnoli, Abruzzo, from barren land to star status in under 20 years. With stints at producers like Jacques Selosse in Champagne, Nicolas Joly at Coulee de Serrant, Egon Muller in the Mosel, and multiple producers in Chablis, it is no wonder that Cristiana's wines are some of the best in Italy. She specializes in single vineyard, old vine, and special clone bottlings that express a distinct side of Abruzzo that not many capture. Her Archivio is meticulously crafted from massal selected 67-year-old vines from four special biotypes of Montepulciano. Archivio, translating to "archive," is a homage to these biotypes, and each is named after the Tiberio family's dogs: Tione, Quarmari, Diana, and Otto. The final wine produced exudes a distinct silky texture with tart raspberry and savory spice mingled with violet inner florals.153

Etna Rosso, Girolamo Russo, "'a Rina", 2021Famed winemaker Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo has been instrumental in the recent surge in popularity of Mt. Etna wines. In his early years, Giuseppe had his eyes set on his career in music and literature. However, in 2004 he returned to his hometown of Passopisciaro to tend to his father's 18 hectares of 100-year-old vines planted to varietals native to Mt. Etna. He rose to fame within the region after studying under some of Etna's greatest producers: Frank Cornelissen, Marco de Grazia of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, and Andrea Franchetti of Passopisciaro. As a classically trained pianist, Giuseppe is no stranger to precision and focus. His spellbinding wines of extreme elegance and depth can only be created on the volcanic terroir of Mount Etna. His "'a Rina" bottling exudes bright red berries, sweet spice, and a faint hint of tobacco displaying the true essence of Mt. Etna.88

Peay, Sonoma Coast, 2020Representing around a third of the estate's Pinot Noir output, Peay focuses on an aromatically expressive and "pretty" version of Pinot Noir. This cuvée comes from a blend of their estate wines that they fortify through a blind tasting panel. The winery is owned an operated by husband and wife partners Nick Peay and Vanessa Wong. Nick's brother, Andy, sells the wine and runs the business side of the company. This partnership is a true family business making a name for themselves in the competitive world of California wine growers.138

Featured Vin Santo del Chianti
Felsina, 2016Literally translated "Holy Wine", Vin Santo has a rich history dating back to the heart of the Renaissance era. Using the unique passito method, grapes are dried out on straw mats to concentrate sugars and amplify complexity. Legend has it that a 14th century friar once used leftover Vin Santo from Mass to heal the sick. We're not guaranteeing a miracle, but might suggest that a glass of this 'enlightened spirit' can cure what ails you375ml 144

Quintarelli, "bianco Secco Ca' Del Merlo", 2021Though Giuseppe Quintarelli gained his fame with his red wines, especially his iconic Amarone, the estate also crafts a beautiful white, evocative of the Veneto. This is a seductive blend of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscana, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Saorin deriving from 30-year- old vines grown in mineral-rich soils. Combining a rounded texture and lifted aromatics, this is a perfect white wine to use as an aperitif on its own or paired with light, crisp bites. Served out of a magnum, this is an undeniable declaration of being determined to bring the party.333
